Dear Advocate for Motivation in the Workplace,
You must be here because something is painfully tearing away at your emotional well being in the workplace?
- It could be the commute
- Could be the parking trauma's you have to deal with
- Could be the atmosphere
- Could be the chair you sit in
- The outdated computer you have
- It could even be a whole system that no one knows how to operate
- It could even be the ongoing customer disastisfaction finally eating away at you...
There is a high possibility it could also be the people you work with....
- Their negativity could be cancerous....
- Rumors are overtaking every conversation
- No one around is happy with anyone or anything ...
- You may feel that that they are not competent...
- You may be concerned they are not pulling their weight
- Their lack of productivity is making your work harder
- That same lack of productivity is making your load larger
- And overall you are down right frustrated!!!
Some people even lose motivation simply by seeing their favorite colleagues part ways with the company. Or they are dealing with overwhelming personal issues that they cannot keep separate from work.
Any of this could be a result of corporate politics, organisational restructuring, downsizing, economic restraints and any number of factors internal or external.
To compensate for all of these problems corporate leaders spend significant budgets on training programs, team building exercises in the wild (like brat camps for grown ups), motivational get togethers, communication programs or suddenly descend with reinvented systems more mature workers remember from twenty years ago.
And not all of it works to solve the real problems at hand.
The bottom line is....
"If you or any other employee around you is unmotivated at work - everything suffers no matter what small bandaid gestures are made!"
No matter what the reason...you need to inject TRULY EFFECTIVE and INTELLIGENT positive changes as soon as possible so that every staff member is a motivated employee and stays that way!
Can you imagine what it would be like to:
• Become the envy of other managers
• Have staff queuing to be transferred to your team
• Be sought out to teach others what you know
• Come to work in the morning with a spring in your step
• Go home at night refreshed by your work experience
"Its time to stop wondering how these can be achieved in a workplace beset by stressful episodes, long hours of work, complexity, conflicts and confusion....
And take hold of your role as someone devoted to positive change to improve your work life and the lives of others.
I know how it feels to get in my car in the company car park and notice as I drive out of the plant a workers car emblazoned with the bumper sticker ‘disgruntled employee of the month’.
On that occasion I was the consultant and there I was happily going home having interviewed employees all day, and thinking the consultancy fees billed out were going to make a difference to the workplace of one of Australia’s largest engineering and mining companies.
I did make a difference! I can do the same for you!
Two years after that evening I was asked back to repeat the same cultural change process that I had done with them before so the leaders could congratulate themselves that things had changed.
They had, just a bit, but it wasn’t enough in my view.
- The bumper sticker had gone, of course,
- And a lot of cosmetic changes had been made.
- Work teams had been redesigned
- Supervisors were sent on a skills development courses on how to treat their workers with respect!
But it wasn’t enough.
Over time those cosmetic changes were beginning to wear a bit thin.
But I do admit, I was at bit surprised, I knew the process could make a difference - - and it had at least exposed what was going on below the surface. But what most of us didn't expect at the time was how much more work was needed below the surface.
My return visits certainly uncovered the bigger pains and brought the company back to recovery.
On another project...
I had been welcomed by both the Industrial relations and the Marketing managers who had said "You came into the organization in the middle of so much industrial turmoil, and yet still managed to conduct the research in such a manner that encouraged participation from over three quarters of the workforce (2000 people)…
"Your work here has managed to contribute to some type of solidarity among what was a fractured workforce, and this itself is a major achievement."

With a bit of help, absolutely anyone can create positive change in the workplace...
... with virtually NO Human Resources Degrees, Business Schooling or Official Management Training
Everything you need to know about motivating employees and increasing workplace productivity is simply common sense.
No pysch degrees are necessary to understand what humans need.
- Recent research in Britain, North America and Australia tells us that only 14 and 20 percent of workers feel positive about going to work and more than 20 percent whine while they are at work. (IPSOS Research) The Australian Financial Review 10/6/08.
- Just as in Australia the number of stress related disability claims by American employees have doubled in the last few years according to the Employee Assistance Professional Association in Arlington Virginia, while stress related illnesses are estimated to be costing industry between $200 to $300 billion a year.
- Further proof of what is facing, not only industry but also society as a whole, has also come from the National Institute of Applied Psychology and Ergonomics of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety in Cincinnati, Ohio, which has stated that workplace stress has become the single greatest source of overall stress leading to suppressed immune system, poor coping skills, irritability, insecurity, exhaustion and difficulty breathing.
Are you getting the point?
- People need to learn how not to whine in front of others
- How to see the positive side of every situation in life.
- People need to learn how to cope better with stress.
- They need practical skills and excercises to deal with the emotional challenges that create stress.
They don't need a social function with their colleagues! The last thing they need is wilderness survival team building excercises!
WHAT ARE THESE COMPANIES THINKING!!!!!
Okay...I admit FUN is important - so I am not taking away any value from these types of morale building techniques. These activities can be motivating and can improve productivity at work.
But it is statistically proven that the results of these valuable and fun opportunities are time limited.
If you wish to create long term positive changes and motivate employees to be more productive and bigger enthusiasts of your company - you need to look deeper into who they are and what they need fundamentally as PEOPLE!
If this doesn't happen....the employees around you will continue to manifest physical and emotional symptoms that are clearly evident and in many cases prominant at work!
They will continue to bring their lack of motivation around others and it will spread like disease.
Why do you think so many "employment / workplace standard" policies have to include something about sick leave!?
It is common knowledge that stress is everywhere! How people deal with stress is what effects the outcome.
It should start with Executives and Management....if they learn the necessary skills to work WITH and empower their staff...they will see positive change.
"Motivating employees with MEANING is the secret to cracking the code on productivity and success IN SPITE OF what is happening in the workplace or in their lives"
For more than thirty years I have been in the unique position both as a senior manager myself and a consultant and an executive coach, to see up close and personal the truth of what is happening to you as a manager and you as a subordinate in a number of large organizations.
A defining moment came to me one day when I realized just how vulnerable we all are in certain circumstances.
I’d been working closely on an assignment and I had assumed the role as a kind of grief counselor to the HR manager who had some months before lost his wife and baby daughter in a road accident.
One evening after I left the building he was called to the CEO’s office to fix a problem, not of his making. The CEO, a man with very little insight and none of the finesse of a competent leader, having created the problem himself, was now blaming everyone but himself for the problem.
A heated exchange took place. It was the last straw for my friend. That night he put the hose in the exhaust pipe and took his own life, symbolically at the back of the building he’d been working in for ten years.
That is probably the worst shock of my working life. Somehow I couldn’t help blaming myself for what had happened although I knew I had nothing to do with it. I was there to fix the toxicity of that workplace largely created by the CEO who imagined I had a silver bullet in my pocket to fix all the dysfunctions.
Nothing has to happen this way!
I lost a friend because of many personal struggles he had that were simply drawn out and made worse because of work!
I am not saying Executives and Management have a duty to PREVENT such actions in others - some people simply cannot cope with overwhelming stress. But what I am saying is there are fantastic methods to support employees and motivate employees who are in need.
Companies can however make resources available that will assist their employees and create more motivation in their lives and at work.
Work life balance is hard - but it can certainly be worked on and improved upon in MANY small ways that can make insurmountable differences to many.
Companies SHOULD recognize this.
If all management ever does to motivate employees is make small, thoughtful gestures - - it could still be very encouraging. The bigger gestures the bigger rewards as well. Just remember that gestures are meaningless without ongoing action.
Ongoing employee motivation will increase productivity levels and will increase the company's bottom line.
Gestures like:
- Empowerment Processes
- Upskilling
- Acting Positions (where one can take on higher positions as vacations are taken)
- Giving CREDIT where credit is due
- Practicing Respect
- Recognition Programs
- Reward Programs
- Continued Education (including internal workshops)
- Extended Medical
- Extended Dental
- Grief counselling
- Leave support
- Family days
- Sick days
- Extended vacations
- Or BONUS DAYS
- Not to mention hundreds of other great daily acts of kindness and consideration.
If these types of resources were available to staff when needed - many negative circumstances including bullying, communication conflicts, turnover issues, confidentiality breaches and many other tragedies can be avoided.
Just imagine how motivating it would be if the company you worked for CARED enough about you that they made your personal life a better experience - as well as your work life.
This is why I am currently putting the finishing touches on my book entitled "Motivating Work Life Balance; A Guide Book for Employees, Employers and All Working Individuals"
